"Double times double, the seal will rend

Fear not, my children, you still might mend

If one would seek the portal's repair,

An innocent halfling must be spared”

A chill ran up my spine as it finally sank in that I was that halfling prophesied about, and this rhyme had been responsible for saving my life. The little woman quit rocking, as she tilted her head as if hearing a distant voice. She spoke then, clear and strong.

A halfling the omega shall be

Find his beast, set him free

Oh, hell. Even the ancients wanted to insist that I had an inner beast? And now they wanted it to be set free? As if reading my mind, Sean discretely lifted his shirt just enough to show the scars from the night we'd claimed each other.

"Ooh! Bird claiming markings! Those are rare indeed, yep yep yep!"

Maon's voice came from beside me as Sean froze and looked over the brownie who was smiling at his marks. Maon set a fussily prepared tray that contained a vase with a yellow rose bud, four glasses of ice water with floating lemon wedges, and a plate of lemon cookies. I couldn't help but find myself charmed as I reached for a napkin and cookie, along with a glass of water.

Without any regard for societal boundaries, Maon walked over and sniffed at me, running his nose along my arms, tickling me with his surprisingly soft beard. "I heard your rhyme. So, you've never met your bird half, eh? More's the pity because red-tailed hawks are exceptionally pretty."

Sean leaned over me. "You know what kind of bird my Heath is, just from smelling him?"

Maon shrugged. "We all have our gifts." He stopped, and clapped his hands together. "That reminds me! I have just the right gift for the little omega birdie girl you're carrying!"

I had just taken a drink when he said that, so naturally I started choking. Sean set my glass and cookie down, and slapped my back. "Breathe, darlin'. We knew it was fifty/fifty that we'd get a girl. And now we know what kind of bird shifters to research, and that yer carryin' on your family’s legacy line. That's all good information."

"So, we just take him at his word?" I asked in a hushed whisper, not wanting to hurt the little sweetie's feelings.

"You wouldn't? I'd take the word of a fae when it comes to such things every time, indeed I would."

"Oh, there's no such thing as fae, children. That's just a fairy tale." Effie said randomly from where she sat, back to rocking and knitting. Sean and I exchanged a side-eye glance, but kept our mouths shut.

Maon came bouncing back in then, holding out a little pink, knitted beanie. "For your wee one. Like all chicks, she's gonna be bald as anything for the first year. I brought you a hat to keep her warm."

I reached for it, but Maon held up a cautionary finger. "This hat was knit by the phoenix. Her DNA is knit right into it from the time the yarn ran through her hands.
